Hosier Lane and Rutledge Lane are entering an important new chapter.
Renewal works are now underway, led by Citywide on behalf of the City of Melbourne, to refresh, repair and strengthen the laneways for everyone who lives, works, creates and visits here.
Over the coming weeks, the project will include the renewal of kerbs, footpaths and carriageways, with new sawn bluestone kerbing, footpath and pitcher paving in Hosier Lane, and new bluestone kerbing and asphalt pavement in Rutledge Lane.
These works are an important investment in the future of two of Melbourne’s most recognised laneways, supporting safer access, stronger infrastructure and a better everyday experience for the community, local businesses, artists and visitors.
While construction may create some short-term disruption, the long-term outcome is positive. This renewal helps protect the character, function and future of these much-loved laneways.
Looking ahead, Hosier Inc. is already focused on the next chapter of improvements. Building on this current stage of renewal, work is continuing around the introduction of a complete lighting system across the laneways. This remains an important priority, with the aim of making Hosier Lane and Rutledge Lane safer, more welcoming and more appealing for night-time visitors, residents, artists and local businesses.
Works commenced Tuesday 7 April 2026 and are expected to run for approximately eight weeks, weather permitting.
A stronger laneway. A safer laneway. A renewed Hosier Lane for the future.
