In 2025, Hosier Inc stepped well beyond the bluestone of Hosier Lane and straight into the heart of Melbourne, taking part in the Zero Waste Festival at Federation Square. And we did not come empty handed.
Hosier Inc proudly ran its own Recycling Hub on the day, fully managed by our members and volunteers. From morning to close, the hub was busy, practical, and refreshingly human. No greenwashing. No lectures. Just real conversations and real solutions.
The result? Over 500 individual drop offs of hard and difficult to recycle items. The kind of things people usually keep in cupboards because they do not know what to do with them. Bottle lids. Bread tags. Coffee pods. Oral care waste. E-waste. The awkward stuff. The forgotten stuff. The “surely this must go somewhere” stuff.
What made the day special was not just the volume, but the attitude. Hosier Inc has always worked at ground level. In Hosier Lane, that means balancing creativity, respect, heritage, and impact in one of the world’s most visited laneways. At Federation Square, it meant applying that same thinking to waste. Smart. Friendly. Appropriate. No judgement. No confusion.
Hosier Inc’s work has always been about people. Visitors. Residents. Artists. And increasingly, businesses. The Zero Waste Festival was a clear signal that our role is expanding. We are actively working with local businesses to help them understand what can be recycled, how to do it properly, and how small changes can make a real difference when done consistently.
This is not about perfection. It is about participation.
Hosier Lane is Melbourne’s premier graffiti and laneway experience, but it is also a living, working environment. What happens there should lead by example. The same principles apply whether you are a tourist dropping off bread tags or a business rethinking its waste stream.
The Zero Waste Festival proved something simple and powerful. When you meet people where they are, give them clear options, and make it easy to do the right thing, they show up. In numbers.
Hosier Inc will continue to build on this momentum, inside the lane and beyond it. Because sustainability works best when it feels human, practical, and shared.
And yes, we will keep manning the hub.
